Twelve-year-old Tumbler Ridge shooting victim Maya Gebala, who has captured the hearts of supporters around the world, continues to show improvement in her recovery.

Maya’s mother, Cia Edmonds, posted on social media Friday, saying her daughter has had her breathing tube removed so doctors could see if she was able to breathe on her own.

“What a terrifying experience,” her mother, Cia Edmonds, said.

“I held her hand while she winced, but she’s doing great. Best that could have been.”

Last week, Cia shared that Maya had opened her eye and was able to follow TV shows.

Maya was shot in the head and neck during the mass shooting in the small town Feb. 10. Less than a week later, Krysta Hunt — Cia’s cousin — shared that doctors had been asking the family to make a decision about organ donation, but had said her improvement had been significant enough that she had been moved from end-of-life care to intensive care.
