Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for parts of south and central Vancouver Island, with up to five centimetres possible Monday morning.

The warning, issued at 8 a.m., covers Greater Victoria, the Malahat Highway, eastern Vancouver Island from Duncan to Nanaimo, inland areas south of Port Alberni, and parts of the west coast from Jordan River to Sooke.

Forecasters say heavy convective flurries moving through the region could produce quick bursts of snowfall during the morning hours.

Environment Canada warns the snowfall may significantly impact the morning commute, with reduced visibility and rapidly changing road conditions possible.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for travel and be prepared for deteriorating road conditions.

Snowfall warnings are issued when weather conditions are expected to create hazardous driving conditions due to accumulating snow.

Environment Canada says conditions should be monitored throughout the morning as flurries move across the region.
