Boil water advisory lifted after Uptown watermain break

Several streets remain closed

THIS IS BREAKING NEWS ON NEWS AT NOON AND BREAKING AT NOON, AS THAT LATEST BOIL WATER ADVISORY FOR NEIGHBORHOODS ACROSS NEW ORLEANS HAS BEEN LIFTED. THAT ORDER, AS YOU KNOW, WAS PUT IN PLACE AFTER A MASSIVE WATER MAIN BREAK NEAR CARROLLTON AND PANOLA SENT WATER JUST GUSHING INTO STREETS, HOMES, EVEN VEHICLES. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN PLAGUING THE CITY, WITH SEVERAL WATER MAIN BREAKS IN RECENT WEEKS, PROMPTING SIMILAR ADVISORIES. WDSU REPORTER ALYSSA GOMEZ HAS BEEN ON TOP OF THIS STORY. JOINING US NOW WITH THE REPAIRS THAT ARE STILL UNDERWAY. YEAH, RANDY, EVEN WITH THAT BOIL WATER ADVISORY LIFTED, CREWS ARE STILL OUT HERE HARD AT WORK WORKING TO FIX THAT MAIN. YOU CAN SEE THEM AT WORK BEHIND ME AT CARROLLTON AND PANOLA. THEY WERE OUT HERE LATE LAST NIGHT INTO THE EARLY HOURS THIS MORNING AND STILL OUT HERE THIS AFTERNOON. NOW, THAT BOIL WATER ADVISORY LIFTED AROUND 930 THIS MORNING. THE BREAK HAPPENED AROUND 215 IN THE MORNING ON MONDAY AND SENT WATER GUSHING DOWN THE STREET. AND LIKE RANDY SAID, THAT OVERFLOW EVEN DAMAGED SOME CARS AND SOME HOMES. THE SEWERAGE AND WATER BOARD SAYS THAT THE 48 INCH LINE THAT BROKE WAS MORE THAN 100 YEARS OLD. YESTERDAY, THE BOARD SAID THAT THERE WAS MORE THAN 30 MILES OF LINE. THAT’S IN THE EXACT SAME BOAT. THE OUTDATED INFRASTRUCTURE HAS BEEN A CONSTANT HEADACHE FOR NEIGHBORS, COMMUTERS AND BUSINESSES. SEVERAL COFFEE SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS THAT WERE UNDER THE BOIL WATER ADVISORIES HAVE HAD TO PIVOT, FORCED TO MAKE CHANGES LIKE LIMITING MENUS OR BUYING BOTTLED WATER. THIS IS THE FIFTH MAJOR WATER MAIN BREAK SINCE JANUARY, AND ONE OF THOSE BREAKS HAPPENED JUST DOWN THE STREET, ALSO ON PANOLA HERE. NOW, THE SEWERAGE AND WATER BOARD SAYS THAT THEY’RE HOPING THAT THAT WATER MAIN IS FIXED AND THAT THEY HAVE RESTORATION BY THE END OF THIS WEEK. AND OF COURSE, ONCE THAT WATER MAIN BREAK IS FIXED, THEY HAVE TO FILL IN THE STREET. THEY HAVE TO REPAVE THE ROADS. THEY’RE ALSO HOPING THAT THAT CAN BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE WEEK.
