In June 2025, we warned Calgarians of an increase of reports in relation to overnight break and enters occurring city-wide while homeowners were asleep. A task force was created and investigating these incidents became a priority for our Service.

Following a complex investigation, our officers were able to identify a large number of suspects believed to be involved in the break and enter incidents. Our officers executed three search warrants at residences located in southeast Calgary and issued six judicial authorizations in relation to the investigation.

As a result, we have now laid more than 100 charges against eight adults and nine youths in connection with more than 45 break and enters. The incidents occurred in all areas of the city, dating back to August 2024, with most incidents taking place in May 2025 and June 2025.

It is believed the individuals charged in this investigation are all known to one another and were working in a co-ordinated effort to target homeowners across Calgary.

The SHOP team monitors roughly 80 SHOP offenders at any one time, with the goal of reducing criminal recidivism.

In addition to our youth engagement plans, our investigators have suppression strategies in place to help prevent further victimization.

“This was a large and complex investigation that required co-ordination across several areas of our Service,” says Staff Sgt. Rob MacKenzie of the District 4 General Investigations Unit. “This is a great example of impactful police work and investigative techniques, as we were able to arrest and charge 17 individuals responsible for victimizing Calgarians.”
