The Detroit Red Wings lost two points in a span of 90 seconds. En route to that setback, they’ve lost their top two centers.
Is it possible that they’ve also lost the plot?
No wonder the club is calling for reinforcements.
On Wednesday, the Red Wings summoned forwards John Leonard, Sheldon Dries, and Eduards Tralmaks from the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins on emergency recall. Detroit plays on Thursday at Tampa Bay against the Lightning.

Already without captain Dylan Larkin for the team’s current three-game road trip due to a lower-body injury, center Andrew Copp left Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers, also due to a lower-body injury. Panthers center and former Red Wings player Tomas Nosek fell on Copp’s lower left leg when the two players got tangled up at a faceoff.
“Doubtful for Tampa Bay,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said of Copp’s status.
“You know we lost (forward Micahel Brandsegg-)Nygard for half a period too. I don’t know if you guys noticed that.”
People did, Todd. And now they are rightfully wondering about his status for Thursday’s game.
Brandsegg-Nygard was playing his first game since being recalled from GR. He missed most of the second period of the loss to Florida with an undisclosed injury.
Detroit was leading the Panthers 3-2 with 90 seconds to play. Carter Verhaeghe scored twice, the second one coming with 14 seconds left in regulation, to rally Florida to a 4-3 win.
“We got a job to do and the first thing we have to do is recover from this loss and then we have to figure out how to plug some holes,” McLellan told reporters after the loss. “We gotta get some bodies here.”
Leonard Previously Played For Red Wings
Of the three players getting the call to the show, Leonard is the only one who’s previously been with the Red Wings. He scored two goals during a nine-game stint earlier this season. He’s tallied 27 times for Grand Rapids.
While he’s been on the Detroit roster a couple of times before, Dries has never gotten into a Red Wings game. Oddly enough, he was called up last February after Copp was placed on IR with a season-ending injury.
🚨DRIES!!!🚨
Just like that a minute later the Griffins retake the lead on a beautiful pass from Ian Mitchell to set up Sheldon Dries for the tap in!!!#GoGRG #AHL #LGRW pic.twitter.com/KhE3NpgFrB

He does have significant NHL experience, scoring 11 goals for the Vancouver Canucks in 2022-23. He’ll likely fill the fourth-line center role in Thursday’s game.
Tralmaks would be making his NHL debut if he suits up on Thursday. The leading goal scorer for Latvia at the Winter Olympics, he’s netted 18 goals for the Griffins.
The moves mean that the top five goal scorers for the AHL Griffins are now with the Red Wings. Besides Leonard and Tralmaks, there’s also forward Dominik Shine (21 goals), Dries (20), and Brandsegg-Nygard (16).
