HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – An evacuation warning issued for parts of Waialua and Haleiwa near Wahiawa Dam was lifted late Friday after water levels at the dam stabilized below evacuation thresholds, Honolulu Emergency Management spokesperson Molly Pierce said Saturday.
Residents of Otake Camp in the Waialua area have also been cleared to return, Pierce said. Some flooding remains in the area, but officials determined it is safe to go back. Officers are on site assisting residents with the return.
Shelters remain open
Seven shelters are currently open across Oahu as the Kona Low storm continues to bring strong winds and heavy rains throughout the day. Pierce said more than 70 people sought shelter overnight.
“We do intend to keep shelter open as long as is needed for impacts from the storm,” Pierce said.
Pierce said officials may begin consolidating some shelter locations depending on conditions, but no shelters will close before it is safe to do so.
Roads dangerous islandwide
Pierce said roads across Oahu remain hazardous, with downed trees, debris, landslides, boulders and heavy ponding and flooding reported. State Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen also addressed road conditions.
No area of the island has been spared, Pierce said, with significant impacts reported on the North Shore, the west side, townside and the windward side.
“No matter where you are out there today, please do continue to use caution on the roads,” Pierce said.
Traffic signal outages
Power outages have knocked out traffic signals across the island, Pierce said. She urged drivers to treat any completely dark signal as an all-way stop.
Pierce also warned that signals may need to be reset once power is restored, which can cause additional confusion at intersections.
“If you see officers in the roadway, follow their instructions — even if those do not match what the signal is telling you. Always follow officers on the ground,” Pierce said.
