Police are investigating the death of Martha Nolan-O’Slatarra (33), who was found dead on a yacht at the Montauk Yacht Club in East Hampton, on Long Island, New York, on Monday night.

Homicide squad detectives and Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office are probing the incident involving of the Carlow-born fashion designer, who first moved to the US when she was 24.

In a statement on Wednesday, local police said that an autopsy “did not show evidence of violence and her final cause of death is pending further examination”.

A police spokesperson earlier said emergency services attended the scene after receiving a call regarding an “unconscious woman”.

The statement said: “East Hampton Town Police responded to a 911 call from a man reporting a woman unconscious on a boat docked at the Montauk Yacht Club, on Star Island Road, at approximately 12am. Good Samaritans attempted to perform CPR on the woman.

“Martha Nolan-O’Slatarra (33), of Manhattan, was pronounced dead on the boat by first responders.

“The preliminary investigation and exam were inconclusive regarding the cause of death, which will be determined by an autopsy conducted by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.”

Montauk Yacht Club is a popular lakefront club located on the north coast of East Hampton, New York.

“We are saddened to learn of the tragic incident that took place. Our team is cooperating with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation and remains committed to the safety and well-being of our guests and staff. We have no further comment at this time,” a Montauk Yacht Club spokesperson said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told the Irish Independent it was aware of the case and was providing consular assistance.

The spokesperson added: “As with all consular cases, the department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”

Carlow county councillor Thomas Kinsella, who represents the Muineabeag area, said: “It’s very very tragic news for her family and her friends, especially being so far away from home.”

The well-known and popular businesswoman spoke to the Irish Independent last year about her entrepreneurial spirit and her love of fashion.

She said it inspired her to merge her “love for travel” with her knowledge of marketing.

She also spoke of her “hard-work mindset” and determination.

“Carlow is a small town, I was the small town girl who needed to get out to achieve her big dreams,” Ms Nolan Slatarra said at the time.

“I always knew I wanted to be successful, that I was money-driven, business-driven – and that fashion is a tough industry and it would be a slow road.”

Speaking about networking and business relationships, Ms Nolan-O’Slatarra said she had made new friends through her career but she “still [had] all my Carlow friends. They are still my crew”.

Ms Nolan-O’Slatarra studied commerce at UCD before completing a master’s in digital marketing at Smurfit Business School.
