Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews underwent successful surgery to repair his MCL, the team announced on Thursday.
The surgery took place in New York City and Matthews recovery time is expected to be 12 weeks.
Last week, the Leafs announced that Matthews would miss the remainder of the season after incurring a Grade 3 MCL tear and a quad contusion following a knee-on-knee hit from Anaheim Ducks defenceman Radko Gudas.
Gudas was ejected from the game and later given a five-game suspension for the hit.
Matthews finishes the season with 27 goals and 26 assists in 60 games for the Maple Leafs.
The 28-year-old was also the captain of the US Olympic team that captured gold at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
The Maple Leafs are currently 29-28-12, third last in the Eastern Conference with 70 points.
Matthews has 428 goals, a franchise record, and 780 points in 689 games over his 10-season NHL career.
