Coventry City fans were in fine voice at Swansea, already beginning to look forward to renewing old acquaintances in the Premier League
Coventry City pulled off a thoroughly professional away win against a Swansea side full of attacking intent and determination to back up their impressive home form.
Brandon Thomas-Asante opened the scoring for the Sky Blues from the penalty spot after Ephron Mason-Clark turned sharply before being caught by Ben Cabango.
The Swans then paid the price for winger Eom Jisung’s failure to clear, as Frank Onyeka’s cross ricocheted to Matt Grimes who hit a sweetly struck volley in off the post. Another Onyeka cross led to the third goal, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s far-post shot beating goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux with the aid of a deflection off Ethan Galbraith. Here are some of the big talking points from an outstanding 3-0 win.

City seize the day
All three teams directly below the Sky Blues dropped points in their lunchtime fixtures, with second placed Middlesbrough only managing a point at Blackburn Rovers while third and fourth placed Ipswich and Millwall cancelled each other out with a 1-1 draw at Portman Road to keep a healthy points cushion between them and top spot going into the international break whatever happened at the Swansea.com Stadium.
The fact that Frank Lampard’s men took full advantage with a win in South Wales means they hit the 80 point mark, nine off Boro and 11 clear of the Tractor Boys and the Lions in the race for the Championship title.

Perfect game management
In a typical Championship contest, this game could have gone either way until the penalty just after the half hour severely dented Swansea’s early endeavour that had seen them hit the bar and the post before Thomas-Asante drilled home from 12 yards.
Even after that the Swans passed up the opportunity to pull level almost immediately when Goncalo Franco sent a worryingly free header wide. But two more Coventry goals followed – all three in the space of 11 minutes – to take the game away from the hosts before half-time.
The way City then went about the second 45 was just as impressive as they refused to sit deep to defend their healthy lead, and maintained their threat in the opposition half to ensure Vitor Matos’s men couldn’t build any momentum for a sustained fight-back. Tactically, the Sky Blues were spot on.

“We’re goin’ to win the league, we’re goin’ to win the league…” sang the Sky Blue Army ahead of kick-off at the Swansea.com Stadium, such was the buoyant mood in the camp following the lunchtime results.
And midway through the second half – after seeing their team comfortably manage their 3-0 first half lead – they were dusting off some of their old favourite top flight ditties by singing, “Arsenal away, ole, ole…” and “**** on the Villa,” as the travelling faithful looked forward to the prospect of mixing it with the big boys next season.
With just seven games, it seems inconceivable that City could mess up automatic promotion now. And the fans clearly want to do it in style by taking the title.
Class act’s perfect riposte to boo-boys
Matt Grimes refused to be drawn by the Swansea boo-boys who targeted him every time he touched the ball in the opening exchanges of his first return to the club he’d served so exceptionally for a decade before joining the Sky Blues.
He answered them in the best possible way, by doing his talking with the ball and producing the best goal of City’s three with a beautifully hit volley that went in off the post to extend the visitors’ lead to 2-0. And a further measure of the midfielder’s class, he refused to celebrate out of respect for his former club which he still holds dear to his heart.
His reaction actually served to shut them up, with most realising how petty their vocal protest had been in the first place.

Frank’s selection hint
Bobby Thomas was put straight back into the starting line-up ahead of Luke Woolfenden following his return to fitness from a calf strain that kept him sidelined for three games. The selection decision spoke volumes for Lampard’s preference as to his first choice right-sided centre-back, and leaves the summer signing from Ipswich back where he was, providing back-up from the bench.
Meanwhile, Joel Latibeaudiere was also restored to the side in place of Liam Kitching as the head coach opted to reunite the central defensive partnership that had helped City to four straight victories in February, suggesting that the Thomas/Latibeaudiere partnership is his new number one pairing at the heart of the defence based on recent form.
