‘Wednesday could be quite a shock to the system’

Temperatures are set to plummet tonight, with some areas of Greater Manchester perhaps waking up to snow in the morning.
Met Office forecasters have warned that Brits could be in for a ‘shock to the system’ as the country sees some wintry weather at the end of March following a relatively warm period.
Some areas around Greater Manchester could see snow or sleet showers as temperatures fall to low single digits by the early hours of Wednesday. The latest forecast suggests that Oldham and Tameside will see the most wintry showers during Wednesday morning, with sleet forecast for several hours.
But maps show snow falling at times over Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside, Stockport and Manchester as the morning goes on. While the region could be set for snow, it seems more likely that the majority of the precipitation will fall as heavy rain meaning it’s likely to be a very wet Wednesday.
Deputy chief Forecaster Steven Keates said: “After a spell of mild and brighter weather, the UK will turn increasingly unsettled in the coming days. A series of weather fronts will bring periods of rain, strong winds and much colder air by midweek. Wednesday could be quite a shock to the system.
“Temperatures will range from 6°C to 10°C, but it will feel closer to low single figures for many areas in the wind. Wintry showers are likely, especially over higher ground in the north, and a widespread frost – with icy patches for some – is possible on Wednesday night. It should be a little milder again by the end of the week, with many areas seeing another spell of rain on Friday.”

Forecasters said Wednesday will feel “markedly colder across all parts, with rain, sleet and hail showers potentially quite widely, and snow likely over higher ground in the north”.
The Met Office said it will be much colder than it has been recently, with the wind chill making it feel particularly chilly. Areas of rural Scotland could potentially see lows of -5C, the Met Office added.
