A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run death of an Ottawa school crossing guard.
According to Ottawa police, a man in his 50s was struck while on duty near an elementary school on Cedarview Road at Kennevale Drive on Monday morning.
Police identified the man in a news release as Peter Clark and extended its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
“Crossing guards play a vital role in protecting children and families, standing in all conditions to ensure students can travel to and from school safely,” police said in a statement. “Mr. Clark’s commitment to that responsibility reflects a service to the community that deserves our utmost respect and gratitude. This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts are with the school community and all those affected.”

Clark was transported to hospital but later died from his injuries.

In their initial news release, police said they were actively looking for a dark-coloured F-150 believed to be involved in the collision. In an update Tuesday, they said a 19-year-old man was arrested.

“It’s completely unacceptable that this should happen to someone who was trying to keep children safe,” Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said in a social media post. “What a terrible loss for our community.”
The investigation is still ongoing, police said, and additional information will be provided when it’s made available.
