Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been nominated for the 2025 Men’s Ballon d’Or.

The 28-year-old, who left United to sign for Napoli in a deal worth £25million last summer, enjoyed a memorable first season at the Italian outfit. Indeed, McTominay helped Antonio Conte’s side win the Serie A title, scoring 12 goals in 34 league matches and winning the division’s Most Valuable Player award in the process.

McTominay scooped several accolades during his maiden campaign at Napoli, but his latest achievement could be up there as one of his greatest. The Scotland international has been named on the shortlist for this year’s Ballon d’Or prize alongside 29 other players from around the world.

Alongside McTominay, Paris Saint-Germain stars Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Vitinha, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Fabian Ruiz, Barcelona quartet Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Pedri, Robert Lewandowski, Real Madrid trio Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Inter Milan duo Lautaro Martinez and Denzel Dumfries, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Florian Wirtz, Arsenal duo Declan Rice and Viktor Gyokeres, Bayern Munich pair Harry Kane and Michael Olise, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy are included.

After coming through United’s academy system, McTominay made his first-team debut in May 2017 during a Premier League game against Arsenal. That appeared to give him a springboard to go and feature more for Jose Mourinho, with the midfielder then playing 23 times in all competitions the following season.

He continued to have a bit-part role in the United side before cementing himself as an integral figure in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad in 2019/20 and 2020/21, establishing himself as a consistent performer.

However, McTominay’s game time started to reduce following Erik ten Hag’s appointment, and while he started to show some form at the end of his final season, the midfielder left to sign for Napoli last August.

It was a decision that was questioned by some of the United fanbase, given the contribution and service he had given the club, but for him, he has flourished since quitting Old Trafford and found a new lease of life abroad.

Reflecting on his first 12 months in Naples and winning the Serie A title, McTominay told Radio CRC in July: “It was the best moment of my career. I couldn’t have dreamed of anything better.

“I did an interview four months ago and told the Neapolitans I wanted to bring them the league title, and through hard work – we did it.

“The target was very important, but now we have to focus on the new season and we have to do it again. Great teams and great players are always hungrier and I will do my best for this team. We have a lot of matches this year and a great group.”
