Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has expressed doubts over Jarrod Bowen replacing Mohamed Salah.

The Reds are gearing up for the emotional farewell for the Egyptian after a record-breaking nine years at Anfield. This week, Salah confirmed that he will be leaving Liverpool in the summer after reaching a mutual agreement with the club’s hierarchy.

Arne Slot and the figureheads on Merseyside face a decision over replacing the 33-year-old, who turned out one of the best individual performances last season to inspire Liverpool to Premier League title success. The Reds are being linked with a host of names, Yan Diomande, Francisco Conceição and Michael Olise to name a few.

Some names in England’s top-flight have also been touted, too, including Bowen, but the former Reds captain has raised uncertainty about his credentials to follow in Salah’s footsteps.

He said: “I really like Bowen and think he is a top player but I am not sure he is Salah’s level to replace him.

“Liverpool will probably look for more one v one merchants who can go on the outside. At times this season, certainly when they had that spell when they were quite inconsistent, they were too predictable on the sides.

“And the way this manager [Arne Slot] wants to play is work it side to side to set the one v ones up. They have missed [Luis] Diaz a lot. I would say we need to address the sides of the pitch.”

Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season and Fanatics has cut the price of this season’s kits with ‘M. Salah 11’ printing.

Bowen is a key player for West Ham United and his form has earned him a place in the England squad, with the prospect of joining the Three Lions in North America for this summer’s World Cup.

With four years remaining on his current contract, he currently finds himself leading West Ham’s charge to avoid relegation.

Throughout his career in East London, he has 84 goals and 58 assists in all competitions. But Jamie Carragher also raised doubts over whether Bowen could emulate the three-time PFA Player of the Year at Anfield.

“No (I cannot see Bowen replacing Salah),” said the former Liverpool defender.

“He was maybe on Liverpool’s radar under Jurgen Klopp early on.

“But obviously Mo Salah was already there. But no, he’d be too old for Liverpool.”
