One person is dead and another injured following a three-vehicle crash in Hamilton on Tuesday, police say.
In a post on social media, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a tractor trailer and two passenger vehicles were involved in the collision. He said one car caught fire.
“It happened around 5:30 [a.m.],” he said. “It was dark and still foggy, a bit misty at the time.”
Schmidt said later in the day the person who died was a 22-year-old man from Caledonia. He was driving northbound in a pickup truck when he tried to pass a tractor trailer. He wasn’t able to pass before oncoming traffic appeared around a curve, said Schmidt.
“As the driver tried to get in front of the tractor trailer, there was contact between the two vehicles,” he said.
“The [pick-up truck] lost control and ended up going into the southbound lanes of traffic where it was struck by a southbound passenger vehicle.”
The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another person was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.
Schmidt said police are looking into road and driver conditions at the time of the crash.
Highway 8 was closed both ways between Orkney Road and Highway 52 near Rockton for much of the day. It re-opened around 2:30 p.m., police said on X.
