The Gunners come into the second leg with a healthy 3-1 lead, with goals from Stina Blackstenius, Chloe Kelly and Alessia Russo in the first leg. However, Lauren James‘ 30-yard stunner at the Emirates Stadium means this tie remains alive.
It was an evenly fought contest at the Bridge that gradually heightened in intensity. The Gunners defended bravely as Chelsea pushed hard for a breakthrough and by the time it came through Sjoeke Nüsken, it was too late.
There was late drama, with Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor being sent off for her protesations over Katie McCabe‘s blatant hair-pull on Alyssa Thompson. The Arsenal defender grabbed Thompson’s ponytail as she sped away from her and was lucky to remain on the pitch.
It was an absurd yet fittingly dramatic end fo a fascinating quarterfinal tie between these two sides.
