March 1988, quarter-final – Manchester City 0-4 Liverpool

In what was a dominant display for Liverpool, a piece of John Barnes magic on the left wing set up Ray Houghton to score an impressive volley in the top left corner.

Peter Beardsley doubled the Reds’ lead from the penalty spot, blasting beyond Mike Stowell.

Goals from Craig Johnston and Barnes in the final 15 minutes wrapped up a place in the last four and with it an emphatic victory – and a historic one at that at Maine Road.

February 2001, fifth round – Liverpool 4-2 Manchester City

Gerard Houllier‘s men took a comfortable 2-0 lead in the opening 12 minutes of this tie thanks to Jari Litmanen‘s penalty and well-taken Emile Heskey effort.

Although Andrei Kanchelskis pulled one back for the visitors, the two-goal cushion was later restored by Vladimir Smicer‘s spot-kick.

Markus Babbel then headed home the fourth goal, before Shaun Goater added a late consolation for the visitors, with Liverpool going on to lift the trophy as part of an historic treble-winning campaign.
