Egypt on Wednesday condemned Israel’s latest strikes on Lebanon, accusing it of trying to sabotage efforts to restore calm in the region following a US-Iran ceasefire announcement.

In a statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry denounced the Israeli attacks that targeted wide areas across Lebanon and killed and injured hundreds of civilians.

The ministry said the strikes deliberately targeted civilian facilities and infrastructure, describing them as a blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law.

It said the attacks came following the announcement of a US-Iran ceasefire agreement and “completely contradict” the positive atmosphere that followed.

It accused Israel of seeking to undermine ongoing regional and international efforts to reduce tensions and promote dialogue and diplomacy, warning that the attacks risk dragging the region into wider chaos.

Cairo called for immediate intervention by regional and international actors to halt what it described as Israel’s “reckless and dangerous escalation” and prevent the region from sliding into further violence and instability.

The ministry reiterated Egypt’s full support for Lebanon and stressed the need to respect the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

The Israeli army launched a wave of deadly strikes across Lebanon on Wednesday, killing at least 254 people and injuring 1,165 others, according to the Lebanese Civil Defense.

Israel has carried out airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon since a cross-border attack by the Hezbollah group on March 2, despite a ceasefire that took effect in November 2024.
