A man in his 70s has died after being punched while he spoke to two teenagers who reportedly threw a branch at a cyclist, police say.

Officers were called to Honeybourne Way in Cheltenham at about 19:30 BST on Wednesday to reports two boys on Millennium Bridge had thrown a branch at someone cycling below.

The cyclist was not injured but when the boys were later approached by a separate man in his 70s, one of them punched him in the face, Gloucestershire Police said. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died earlier.

Two boys – aged 17 and 16 – who were previously arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm are now being questioned on suspicion of murder, police said.
