A man is dead after a violent incident at a residence in Ajax early Tuesday, said Durham police.
Officers responded to a break-in call at a home near Shorten Place and Haskell Avenue around 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, said Const. Nicholas Gluckstein at a news conference at the scene.
An adult male was found at the scene with “traumatic injuries” and later pronounced dead, said Gluckstein. He said the man is Durham’s second homicide victim of 2026.
Gluckstein said two suspects were seen running away before police arrived. Officers searched the area along with a K9 unit, but could not locate the suspects.
While the call to police indicated it could have been a break-in, Gluckstein says investigators believe the incident was targeted and not an actual break-in case.
There are no concerns to the public’s safety at this time, he said. Police have not yet said if the victim was a resident at the home or an alleged intruder.

Gluckstein said the case is not believed to be a case of domestic violence.
He said the victim’s and suspects’ identities will be shared publicly once more information has been gathered.
Officers are out canvassing the area and urge anyone with video of the area between midnight and 2 a.m. to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers.
