Cam Archer scored a 90th-minute winner to secure a dramatic victory in South Wales that has kept Southampton’s automatic promotion hopes alive.
Shea Charles had drawn them level, 12 minutes after being introduced at the break, having gone behind to a first-half goal from Marko Stamenic.
This win leaves Saints just one point adrift of second-place Millwall, with third-place Ipswich Town set to play on Sunday afternoon.
Asked if there was ever a hint of doubt that Saints would secure all three points, Eckert said: “No.”

“In the end, you need to win it, whatever way. I think there were many moments early on in the game where we could have made that game a lot easier for us,” he added.
“But in the end, it doesn’t matter. Every game gives you challenges; the game today gave us the challenge of conceding after a throw-in.
“Then you need to find a way, and the boys did that. I think you have to give credit to what Vitor [Matos] is doing with the team.
“It’s the ground where you need to cover the most distance, where you need to be able to run the most. We had to adjust a little bit in the way they set up.
“We needed ten minutes to get into the game, and I think after ten minutes, we were completely dominant.”
This win saw Saints equal two records that have stood for over 100 years. They have won seven league games on the spin for the first time since 1908.

They also won eight games in a row across all competitions for the first time since 1896/97, but Eckert is not concerned by those records.
“For me, it’s not the time for any big reflections,” he said. “It’s a nice side fact, but it doesn’t take us anywhere.
“We still have big goals to play for this season, so I think we’re doing well in the way that we’ve been going over the last few weeks.
“We need to put that game to bed tonight, and then we have a big one coming up on Tuesday against Bristol City.”
