SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — Police in San Jose are investigating a deadly collision Wednesday afternoon, which they say killed a young boy in the driveway of an apartment complex.

Police were called to the area along Canoas Garden Avenue before 4:30 p.m. about reports of a 1-year-old who had been struck by a vehicle. The child was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

They say the driver of a minivan hit the boy in the parking area of an apartment complex. The driver remained at the scene and officials determined that alcohol and drugs were not believed to be a factor.

Officers remained at the scene for several hours as the investigation continued.

There was a heavy police presence in the area until about 9:30 p.m., when the minivan was towed away.

Two neighbors said they did not witness the incident itself but came outside after realizing something had happened. One neighbor said she saw the child’s mother shortly after the collision.

“She was hysterical, she had her hands over her eyes,” that neighbor said. “And I think the baby left in the ambulance without her because we saw the mother get into a police vehicle…And I just said we’re praying for you and she said thank you.”
