“One of our most experienced guys left here as far as baseball knowledge. So having him with me, next to me, as well as [pitching coach] Andrew Bailey in there, is important,” Tracy said before the Sox blanked the Blue Jays, 5-0. “He’s a great baseball man and one of my closest friends, so the combination of those two and having him by my side is huge.”

Also new and/or different:

⋅ Pablo Cabrera joined the club as the first base coach (replacing Flores) and outfield instructor (replacing Kyle Hudson).

Cabrera, 28, had been working with minor leaguers as the infield/outfield defensive coordinator. This is his fourth season in the organization.

⋅ Jack Simonetty was brought to the big leagues as a hitting assistant, a role in which he will aid hitting coach John Soteropulos and interim hitting coach Collin Hetzler (promoted with Tracy from Worcester).

Simonetty, 26, is a Springfield College graduate. He had been working as the hitting coach for the Sox’ squad in the rookie-level Florida Complex League. This is his fourth season in the organization, too.

Tracy identified Soteropulos as the lead hitting coach. Nonetheless, something of a group effort. Soteropulos and Hetzler worked together for several years at Driveline before getting into professional baseball, so they have a good rapport and speak the same hitting language.

⋅ Steve Langone, a Reading High and Boston College alumnus, rejoined the major league staff doing advance scouting work. He has been with the Sox since 2009 and had worked a similar role for the Red Sox from 2013-19, a stretch that include two World Series titles. In 2020, he moved onto the professional scouting staff.

⋅ Drew Ehrhard, who had been a minor league player for the Sox since 2023, is up as a bullpen catcher, seemingly putting his playing days behind him. He had played sparingly for Double-A Portland this year.

⋅ Parker Guinn, catching instructor, will move into the dugout for games (as opposed to being in the bullpen as a bullpen catcher), Tracy said. He will handle all things related to the backstops and PitchCom.

⋅ Nelson Paulino will move from hitting coach for Single-A Salem to the hitting coach group in the majors, probably when the Red Sox open a homestand Friday, Tracy said. That will give the major league staff a Spanish-speaking member of that crew. Paulino has been with the organization for 29 seasons, including the past 10 with Salem.

Altogether, the Red Sox’ coaching staff felt closer to complete Monday than it did Sunday, the first day after they fired manager Alex Cora and six coaches.

“We have a more full staff. Yesterday, we divided and conquered and had people fulfilling multiple duties to get us through, but we should have more help today,” Tracy said.

Marcelo vs. lefties?

Through the first month of the season, Mayer accrued all of six plate appearances against lefthanded pitchers. Cora usually benched him in favor of Isiah Kiner-Falefa or Andruw Monasterio when the Red Sox were due to face a southpaw.

Might that change under Tracy?

“I want to see Marcelo get some opportunities,” Tracy said. “I’m not saying that tonight if something comes up and there’s a favorable matchup that we wouldn’t do that. I’m not saying that Marcelo is going to start against Tarik Skubal every time. But if there’s opportunities that we feel like we can give them a little bit more of that, we may do that.”

Roman Anthony won’t necessarily bat third every day, Tracy cautioned, but he was there for a second game in a row Monday. He went 1 for 4 with a walk, knocking in Willson Contreras with a two-out infield single in the fifth as Blue Jays starter Dylan Cease stumbled coming off the mound to make the play.

“If we get some people on base in front of him, he takes some at-bats with men on,” Tracy said. “It’s not a given that he’s always there, because when he’s going right, [so is] the on-base ability too. So having a guy leading off with that kind of on-base ability is also appealing. But he can really hit, especially when he’s going. So if Jarren [Duran] and Contreras get going, and then Roman gets opportunities with people on base, we’re going to try that out.”
