One person was killed and seven others injured after a woman drove a Dodge Charger the wrong way down Interstate 680 in Contra Costa County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP’s Contra Costa office was advised of a wrong-way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-680 just north of Highway 242 around 11:20 p.m. Friday. Minutes later, a responding unit observed a multi-vehicle crash just north of Treat Boulevard near Walnut Creek.

A passenger in one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. Four others, including the wrong-way driver, sustained major injuries. Three others had minor injuries. One person had no injuries.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was transported to a local hospital and was later determined to have been impaired at the time of the crash, the CHP said. She was placed under arrest and remained at the hospital for treatment.

All lanes of northbound I-680 were blocked for hours during the investigation
