A 69-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with a shooting Tuesday that killed two people and wounded three others near a Korean market in Carrollton, according to police.
Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire around 9:57 a.m. near the K Towne Plaza in Carrollton. The shooting happened during a business meeting between the man and five others, Carrollton police Chief Roberto Arredondo said at a news conference. The man is accused of shooting and killing two people during the meeting, Arredondo said.

The man was later taken into custody after a short foot pursuit near H Mart at 2625 Old Denton Road, police said. H Mart remained closed for more than two hours while federal and local authorities joined Carrollton police in securing the area after locating the man near the grocery store.

The three surviving victims were taken to area hospitals and are in stable condition, Arredondo said.
Arredondo did not provide additional information on what the business meeting was about, but said the shooting was not a random act of gunfire.

“It was a known business relationship,” Arredondo said. “We are still trying to work through to identify what caused his actions.”
Yellow crime scene tape cordoned off a large section of the K Towne Plaza on Tuesday afternoon as Carrollton police and investigators focused their attention on the area following the shooting. Multiple patrol units lined the perimeter of the area while plainclothes detectives stood near the market’s entrance documenting evidence.
Arredondo thanked other agencies that assisted with the shooting, including the Lewisville Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Denton County sheriff’s office, the Denton County Constable, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Callie Higgins lives in an apartment right behind K Towne Plaza. Higgins said she was walking to the Starbucks at the plaza Tuesday morning when she spotted a few officers, which she thought was odd. By the time she left the Starbucks, she said the number of police had dramatically grown.
She learned from another witness at the plaza that two people had been shot, and was told by police that authorities were still looking for the shooter.
“SWAT approached me and this group that was standing to the side and said, ‘ya’ll have to get out of here, it’s not safe, shooter on the loose,’ ” she said.
Higgins said she went back to her apartment for safety and stayed there for about two hours until she learned the man had been caught.

John Jun, board chair of the Korean American Coalition DFW Chapter, said the shooting shocked the Carrollton community.
“This is not something that happens often in Korean communities, especially here in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Carrollton area,” Jun said.
The shooting happened in an area Jun said many believed to be safe.

The shooting shows no community is immune to violence or the harms that come with it, Jun said.
“Whether Carrollton or any other city, it hurts, right? It hurts the victims,” he said. “The entire community — not just Carrollton, but the surrounding area as well. This is a driving area that people come to shop and buy, and so it does hurt.”
Mike Song, who recently ran for Carrollton City Council, said the shooting shook many in the city’s close-knit Korean American community. The shooting took place in K-Town, a “powerhouse of retail centers” that serves as a cultural and social hub for local families, he said.
