US President Donald Trump is expected to press Chinese President Xi Jinping on Iran during their upcoming meeting in Beijing, although officials said the summit between the two global powers will primarily centre on reducing trade tensions.
Trump’s first visit to China since returning for a second term is set to include elaborate ceremonial events, with the White House announcing plans for a tour of Beijing’s Temple of Heaven and a state banquet.
The meeting between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies is also expected to cover issues including tariffs, Taiwan, artificial intelligence competition and access to critical minerals. “This will be a visit of tremendous symbolic significance,” Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told reporters during a call.
