This is a turbulent time in the world and various topics of concern are emerging. The current war with Iran presents significant moral and legal violations resulting in complex economic impact. The cost of war goes beyond the price of weapons or equipment, it involves lives lost, destruction of international relationships, and erodes a sense of security. Every dollar spent on this illegal war is a dollar not spent on supporting the American people.
Affordability is a term being used more frequently to describe this expanding issue. Affordability seems to be dependent on two main things: the prices of goods/services, and the available income to pay those prices. Something is considered “affordable” if you can pay for it, using cash or credit.
This war is a callous disregard of international law and the U.S. Constitution. As a result, there is a surge throughout this nation of feeling less safe, less protected and less able to afford goods/services. It is not just gas prices that are increasing. I want to amplify the message that the cost of war impacts all levels of life in the U.S.
This moment in time presents opportunities for each person to consider what community values they support and how that might translate into action. There is a role for everyone and many avenues for participation. Taking the time to register to vote and then voting in each election are important steps.
The U.S. Constitution currently includes the First Amendment, protecting the right to speak up ensuring your voice can be heard. Each of us can contribute to meaningful action such as communicating with elected officials, via email, phone or postal mail. Remember, each nationally elected official takes an oath of office to defend the constitutionally protected rights of all people in the U.S.
Attending a rally, demonstration or protest near you is another action to consider. In Mecosta County, Indivisible West Central Michigan is one local group embracing the First Amendment right to gather and to peacefully make their voices heard. An upcoming opportunity will occur on Saturday, May 23, 11 a.m.-1 pm, at the intersection of State and Perry streets in Big Rapids.
This planned community gathering is themed “His war- Our dollars” and is intended to peacefully promote awareness of the unlawful war with Iran which is creating economic hardships for the average American.
Supportive actions take all types of people, all varieties of energy and actions, so I encourage everyone to use their voices as protected under the First Amendment.
