The Syrian Ministry of Interior has condemned a video recording that shows the execution of a young man inside the National Hospital in Suwayda, according to a statement published on its official Facebook page on Sunday, August 10.
The ministry affirmed that those involved in the crime would be held accountable and referred to the judiciary to face appropriate punishment, regardless of their affiliations.
According to the statement, Interior Minister Anas Khattab instructed the Assistant for Security Affairs, Major General Abdel Qader al-Tahan, to directly oversee the investigation in order to identify and arrest the perpetrators shown in the footage as quickly as possible.
A video recording, captured on Sunday, August 10, by a surveillance camera installed at the National Hospital in Suwayda during a raid by government forces, shows the execution of a person wearing healthcare worker attire after a physical altercation.
The perpetrators, dressed in military uniforms from the Ministry of Defense and Internal Security Forces, also surrounded other doctors in the emergency ward. The footage, obtained by the Suwayda 24 website, was recorded on July 16.
The victim was identified as engineer Mohammad Bahsas, a volunteer with the medical staff at Suwayda National Hospital, which had witnessed clashes and violence during the Suwayda events.
Suwayda Health Director Osama Qandilft told Enab Baladi that the hospital came under mortar and gunfire on the morning of July 16, putting the emergency department out of service.
Later that evening, government forces stormed the hospital, sparking clashes inside and around the building before withdrawing.
According to Qandilft, the hospital housed wounded and dead civilians, fighters from local factions in Suwayda, and Ministry of Defense personnel.
Media activist Qutaiba Azzam told Enab Baladi the hospital contained more than 100 bodies—including children, women, elderly men, and young men—most of them unidentified due to the abuse they had suffered. Bullet marks remained on the hospital walls from clashes between local factions and Ministry of Defense forces.
Enab Baladi reviewed photos taken on July 22 from inside the hospital showing the bodies of women, children, and young men, days after the end of military operations in Suwayda.
The mid-July violence in Suwayda left at least 1,013 people dead, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights. Those involved included local factions, government forces, tribal fighters, and Bedouin groups, with Israeli intervention targeting government forces.
