A fire that broke out at Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan early Friday is creating major disruptions during the morning rush.

The FDNY says crews responded to a reported train car fire on Track 11 at the transit hub shortly after 1:30 a.m.

The fire involves an “Amtrak contractor maintenance vehicle in one of the Hudson River tunnels,” according to Amtrak Corporate Communications.

Officials said five civilians are being treated for injuries, including two people who were seriously hurt and transported to nearby hospitals. Three others refused medical attention.

In a statement posted to social media, Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised the quick work of the first responders who were able to extinguish the flames after it reached two alarms.

“I’m grateful to the brave firefighters and EMS members who responded quickly to extinguish this train fire and protect New Yorkers in a moment of danger,” Mandani wrote. “Let’s keep those who were injured in our thoughts and wish them a swift, full recovery.”

The incident continued to cause widespread delays and cancellations across Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit through the morning commute.

Amtrak says all rail service traveling south of Penn Station is temporarily suspended Friday morning following what the agency described as “unforeseen track and signal maintenance.”

“This suspension is anticipated to be in place until noon at a minimum. Services traveling north of New York (NYP) are expected to experience lengthy delays,” Amtrak said in a travel advisory posted on social media.

The LIRR says commuters can expect delays and cancellations during the morning commute, but that service has resumed from Penn Station. Some trains will continue to be diverted to Grand Central Terminal and Long Island City.

NJ Transit has also suspended rail service between Penn Station New York and Newark Penn Station because of overhead wire damage resulting from the fire.

Midtown Direct service is being diverted to Hoboken, according to NJ Transit. Rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored on NJ Transit buses, private carrier buses and PATH service at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street in Manhattan.
