Protesters are expected to gather again on Wednesday after a large crowd met in Southampton on Tuesday for the sentencing of Vickrum Digwa.
Digwa was found guilty of the murder of student Henry Nowak.
Photographs from the scene appear to show disorder which has broken out near Portswood Police Station, with objects and bins thrown towards officers as police in riot gear arrive. Other images show a police van being struck by some demonstrators while others pour beer over the vehicle.
Mr Nowak was arrested as he bled to death after his attacker, Vickrum Digwa, 23, lied to police at the scene of the 2025 stabbing, claiming he had been the victim of a racist attack.
Police bodycam footage shows Mr Nowak pleading with police, telling them he couldn’t breathe multiple times. An officer is heard at one stage saying “I don’t think you have mate” in response.
Nowak died as a result of stab wounds from a 21cm (8in) blade that Digwa carried as part of his Sikh faith. He was jailed for a minimum of 21 years this week.
