MADISON, Wis. — Michael Johnson, the president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, has died.
A spokesperson for the organization confirmed Johnson’s unexpected passing Monday. He was 50 years old.
“While we mourn this loss, our organization remains strong, focused, and committed to continuing the important work Michael helped lead,” spokesperson Ginny Rico said. “Our leadership team and Board are aligned, and plans are in place to ensure continuity and stability during this time.”
Johnson first took over as the organization’s leader in 2010 and led it to tremendous growth. He briefly left the Club in 2018 to become CEO of the United Way of Cincinnati, but came back. His return could not have been more timely, as he helped steer the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic.
A familiar face in the community, Johnson’s passing will be felt throughout the Madison area and beyond.
“We are in the early stages of processing this loss and supporting our team,” Rico said. “We will share additional information in the coming days, including ways to honor Michael’s legacy.”
Former Chief Education and People Officer Taylor Jackson will serve as the Club’s interim president and CEO.
In a statement, Dane County Executive Melissa Agard remembered Johnson for his advocacy and leadership.
“His unwavering commitment to the youth of Dane County will continue to have an impact for generations to come,” Agard said. “Everyone who met Michael came away with an understanding of the intensity, purpose, and passion he brought to his work every day.”
