Police have arrested five American cruise ship passengers “for several offences” following a physical altercation at the Nassau Cruise Port in the Bahamas on Monday, June 8

“A violent struggle” between police officers and the five people then reportedly took place inside a local police station, the Royal Bahamas Police Force stated in a release

The suspects are being investigated on multiple charges, including resisting arrest and assaulting police officers

Five American cruise ship passengers have been arrested following a “physical altercation” in the Bahamas.

On Tuesday, June 9, the Royal Bahamas Police Force stated in a release that three women and two men were detained “for several offenses following an incident at the Nassau Cruise Port,” on Monday, June 8.

The statement added that officers initially responded to a “physical altercation involving several cruise ship passengers,” just after 4:45 p.m. local time in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. 

The authorities then took the U.S. nationals into custody. Upon arrival at a local station “officers prepared to search the arrested individuals” when “a violent struggle reportedly ensued between officers and the five suspects,” the police statement added.

“One female suspect allegedly threw a chair through a southern glass door, causing it to shatter,” the statement continued. “A male suspect then allegedly kicked out the remaining glass and attempted to escape, but was immediately subdued by officers. Additional police units were requested to assist in restoring order.”

“As a result of the confrontation at the police station, several officers’ uniforms were damaged, and four officers sustained various injuries,” the statement added.

“Two officers were reportedly struck about the body, while another suffered a laceration to the mouth. The fourth officer sustained a serious injury to his left shoulder and was transported to the hospital by ambulance for medical treatment. His condition is currently unknown.”

The five U.S. citizens were also treated by medical staff for minor injuries sustained in the earlier incident at the Nassau Cruise Port. They remain in custody and are being investigated for Fighting in a Public Place, Resisting Arrest, Assaulting a Police Officer, Malicious Damage and Disorderly Behavior in a Police Station.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force did not immediately reply to PEOPLE when asked for further comment.
