California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) mocked President Donald Trump with an all-caps social media message in a Truth Social-styled tone as he announced his state’s response to a Republican-led redistricting plan in Texas.
Newsom, who used one of the president’s least favorite nicknames and mimicked his communication style, began his post by referring to the president as “DONALD ‘TACO’ TRUMP, AS MANY CALL HIM,” a moniker that has circulated among Wall Street investors, meaning “Trump Always Chickens Out” — a reference to his seesawing pattern on tariff deadlines. He then went on to say that that California will begin to draw “MORE ‘BEAUTIFUL MAPS,’” after he issued a series of warnings to Trump this week.
The announcement comes as Trump has backed a plan in the Lone Star State, where GOP lawmakers have proposed a new state congressional map designed to secure at least five more safe seats ahead of the 2026 midterms. The move, widely seen as an effort to preserve Republican control of the House, has been met with pushback from Texas Democrats and Democratic governors, including Newsom, who had floated his own plan to counter it.
“…THEY WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!),” Newsom’s press office wrote on X on Tuesday.
“BIG PRESS CONFERENCE THIS WEEK WITH POWERFUL DEMS AND GAVIN NEWSOM — YOUR FAVORITE GOVERNOR — THAT WILL BE DEVASTATING FOR ‘MAGA.’ THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! — GN,” the account continued.
On his Truth Social platform, the president typically uses a similar format of capital letters and punctuation. Newsom also sarcastically copied Trump in adding a sign off and thanking his audience for their “attention to this matter.”
Newsom had sent a letter to Trump on Monday urging him to halt the map-drawing battle that has spread across red and blue states. He warned that Republicans were “playing with fire” by pushing GOP-favorable maps, and said that California will stand down if other states followed suit.
“This attempt to rig congressional maps to hold onto power before a single vote is cast in the 2026 election is an affront to American democracy,” Newsom wrote in the letter.
On Tuesday, Newsom’s office account had issued what it called its “FINAL WARNING” to Trump, adding “STOP CHEATING OR CALIFORNIA WILL REDRAW THE MAPS.”
“AND GUESS WHO WILL ANNOUNCE IT THIS WEEK? GAVIN NEWSOM (MANY SAY THE MOST LOVED & HANDSOME GOVERNOR) AND A VERY POWERFUL TEAM. DON’T MAKE US DO IT!!!” it added.
Last week, Newsom and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced that they would move forward with plans to hold a special election in November to allow voters to approve a ballot measure on a redistricting proposal. The plan would allow Newsom to temporarily bypass the state’s independent redistricting commission, which is made up of five Democrats, five Republicans and four independents. If approved, the map would remain in effect until the 2030 census.
Meanwhile, more than 50 Texas Democrats fled their state earlier this month in an attempt to block Republicans from redrawing the map. Texas Republicans hinted that they are expected to end the Legislature’s current special session on Friday and immediately call a new one.
