The SIU has begun investigating an incident in which a pedestrian was struck by a car and rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
Toronto police say a 12-year-old boy is facing an attempted murder charge after an officer was struck by a stolen vehicle he was driving in East York early Monday morning.
Officers responded to Donlands Avenue and O’Connor Drive for an auto theft call just after 1 a.m. Police said officers discharged their firearms as they attempted to stop the driver who was allegedly fleeing the scene.
The officer was struck, and left with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
When police intercepted the vehicle a second time, the driver was removed and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is investigating the incident, said the officer has since been released from hospital.
One suspect remains outstanding and no description has been released. Police have not released any additional details.
The boy, who cannot be named under the terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is also charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property over $5,000, dangerous operation, fail to stop for police, assaulting a peace officer and leaving the scene of an accident.
The SIU is an arms-length agency called in to investigate whenever police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
