Voters in Alabama, California, Georgia, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Washington, D.C., head to the polls Tuesday. Here are some of the races we’re watching.
Georgia’s GOP Senate and gubernatorial runoffs may be the biggest storyline of the night, with Republican voters deciding who their nominees will be. President Donald Trump offered an eleventh-hour endorsement to Rep. Mike Collins, who’s seeking to challenge Democratic incumbent Sen. Jon Ossoff in November. Derek Dooley, who’s polling slightly behind Collins, was endorsed by incumbent Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp.
In D.C., the Democratic mayoral primary is largely between two leading candidates, progressive front-runner Janeese Lewis George and more centrist Kenyan McDuffie, but is essentially the de facto general election given that the city is overwhelmingly Democratic. Residents will also vote using ranked choice for the first time after approving a ballot measure in 2024.
Meanwhile Trump weighed in on Washington’s primary, stating he “wouldn’t like it” if Lewis George wins. “Maybe we’ll take back Washington and run it on a federal basis. We won’t put up with it,” he said last week.
Alabama will hold runoffs for both the Democratic and Republican Senate nominations, as U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville is leaving his seat to run for governor. Republicans have dominated the governorship for decades, aside from former Democratic Sen. Doug Jones’ (D) historic upset in 2016 and four-year term, and it’s likely to remain deep red. But it is another test of Trump’s sway over the Republican Party at large, with Trump-backed Rep. Barry Moore facing off against Jared Hudson, a former Navy SEAL and political outsider.
In California, there’s a special House election to replace former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D). Oklahoma has House, Senate and gubernatorial primaries.
