Passengers travelling on Via Rail between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal may face significant delays on Tuesday.
Via Rail says Train 65 from Montreal to Toronto was involved in a “trespasser incident” in Lansdowne near Kingston at approximately 2 p.m. No passengers or staff were injured.
Ontario Provincial Police confirm a pedestrian was struck by a train and located deceased.
“Our thoughts are with those affected by this event,” Via Rail said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa.
“Via Rail acknowledges that this situation, which is beyond our control, is impacting the travel plans of our customers, and we apologize for the inconvenience.”
Traffic is expected to resume by 5 p.m.
Going westbound, Train 65, Train 53 from Ottawa to Toronto and Train 47 from Ottawa to Toronto are being held east of Kingston.
Going eastbound, Train 64 from Toronto to Montreal is being held at Kingston.
Via Rail says trains 67 and 645 are also delayed as a result of the incident.
“A stop train order has been put in place while emergency services respond. There will be a police presence in the area, and we ask the public to avoid the vicinity if possible,” said OPP Sgt. Erin Cranton in an email.
Cranton says officers have confirmed the death is not suspicious.
Via Rail says updates will be provided to passengers as soon as possible.
