The Chabad community living in the Côte-des-Neiges (CDN) neighborhood of Montreal, Canada, was rocked by a shooting incident on Monday afternoon.

The incident unfolded in a new apartment complex near Decarie Boulevard and Westbury Avenue, where police responded to an active shooter.

Footage showed SWAT teams with guns and rifles around the area, where children typically play and walk to school. The incident occurred outside Supermarché PA Westbury supermarket and the kosher Deli770 eatery.

Lubavitchers live in that apartment complex, which is near the Beth Rivkah Academy, Chai Center, MADA center and Yagdil Torah.

According to early eyewitness reports, multiple shots were fired, prompting heavy police deployment, road closures, and requests for the public to avoid the area.

“It looks like a war zone,” one resident told COLlive.com.

Initial reports suggested injuries to responding officers. Montreal Police later confirmed that the suspect had been neutralized and that two police officers and one civilian were injured during the incident.

In an updated statement, Montreal Police said: “The suspect has been neutralized. Two police officers and one citizen have been injured. The police operation is still underway. Continue to avoid the area.”

Earlier, police warned residents: “An armed and dangerous suspect is in the CDN sector. Avoid the area bounded by CDN, McDonald, Highway 40, and Queen Mary. If you are in the area, shelter indoors and lock the doors.”

The police operation remained active Tuesday afternoon as authorities continued securing the area.
