PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (Gray News) — A man was killed after a crocodile attacked and dragged him out to sea in Puerto Vallarta, according to authorities in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
The 28-year-old Mexican man was on the beach in front of Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa when he was allegedly attacked about 6 p.m. Friday, according to authorities.
The man’s body was found by the Mexican Navy on Saturday, according to authorities.
The crocodile was captured nearby.
Authorities said the man’s death was a “highly regrettable and unusual and isolated event.”
Jamie Yetter, her fiance, Chris Bury, and her teenage daughter were at the resort’s pool when they heard screams coming from the beach, NBC Los Angeles reported.
“We thought we saw a guy stuck in a rip current, so Chris took off down to the water, and I ran right after him,” Yetter told NBC Los Angeles.
Bury told NBC Los Angeles that he got into a kayak, paddleless, to try and help.
“There were no oars. There was really nothing at the beach at all to help. We were just scrambling, trying to do what we could,” Bury said. “I was on the kayak right when he got pulled under.”
WABC reported that Marriott Puerto Vallarta said it has “appropriate signage, as well as night patrolling and red flags to indicate caution in the area and all were and are properly in place” when the incident happened.
“We extend our thoughts to the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time and are providing appropriate support in line with our policies,” the resort said.
