On October 7, 2023, Micha Popper followed his years-long Saturday morning routine of bicycling with a group of friends along the beach not far from Zichron Yaakov, south of Haifa. As the Hamas attack unfolded, the bikers, all former members of elite units in the Israel Defense Forces – and regulars in the protest movement against the government’s regime coup – returned to their homes, but not for long.
