On Thursday, reports suggested Israel had warned Mr Trump of a fresh Iranian assassination plot. The president, however, played down the claims.
“Israel came up with nothing,” he said. “I’ve been on their list for a long time. That’s what we’re dealing with.”
Some US officials questioned the intelligence’s credibility, telling CNN that Israel might be attempting to draw Mr Trump back into military action.
Tensions rose on Thursday as Ali Khamenei, the former supreme leader who was killed in the opening hours of the war on Feb 28, was laid to rest.
During the ceremony, mourners held banners calling for Mr Trump’s death in revenge. One large banner depicted the president’s head in crosshairs alongside the words: “There will be blood.”
Iran has long sought to target president
Security concerns also forced Mr Trump to alter his travel arrangements on Wednesday.
Mr Trump was forced to return from the Nato summit in Ankara on his old Air Force One jet because his new Qatari plane lacks the full suite of presidential security systems.
US authorities have long warned that Iran has sought to target Mr Trump.
In March, a federal jury convicted Asif Merchant, who prosecutors said had links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, after he travelled to the United States in 2024 seeking to hire a hitman to assassinate the president.
After the plot was foiled in 2024, the Biden administration warned Tehran that any successful assassination of Mr Trump would be treated as an act of war.
On Wednesday, Mr Trump to declare that the “memorandum of understanding” agreed with Iran in June was effectively defunct.
Using some of his strongest language since the ceasefire took effect, he described the Islamic Republic as “a cancer” that had to be removed.
However, the president indicated that diplomatic contacts would continue on Friday.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks’. We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!” he wrote on Truth Social.
Qatari mediators met Iranian officials on Friday in an effort to prevent a further escalation and to discuss freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a source familiar with the talks told Reuters.
