House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he will vote ‘no’ on a Republican proposal to cut US funding to Israel that has split members of his caucus.
Jeffries (D-N.Y.) in a letter to colleagues sent Tuesday called the amendment from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) “overly broad” and said it would restrict the use of funds for humanitarian aid, peace-building, and anti-terror initiatives in addition to military funding.
Jeffries’ letter, obtained by Bloomberg Government, said Democratic leadership isn’t telling rank-and-file members how to vote. The machinations have offered a preview of a fault line among Democrats that would become more pronounced if the party wins control of the House next year.
The vote, which would add the provision to a bill to fund national security and State Department programs in fiscal 2027 (H.R. 8595; BGOV Bill Analysis), could happen this week if Speaker Mike Johnson is able to resolve a standoff with members of his own party.
