Shell Island, one of Europe’s largest campsites, has been keeping a watching brief on the fire above Llanbedr.

It also applauded the efforts of fire crews – and those of local farmers using their quadbikes to get firefighters and their gear up mountainsides.

On Monday, the campsite imposed an ‘immediate fire ban”. This was ‘due to the exceptionally dry ground conditions on site’. It added:

We know many of you enjoy gathering around a campfire, and we appreciate that this may be disappointing. However, the safety of everyone onsite is our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us keep everyone safe.

Campsites across North Wales have also imposed fire and BBQ bans, or have introduced strict curbs.
