Stephen Fleming, New Zealand, 53

In a different area, Fleming is already a partner with McCullum: the two work in a business that sells New Zealand lamb to India. After 18 years as head coach of Chennai Super Kings, during which he won five Indian Premier League titles, Fleming has resigned, potentially making himself available to work with England.

As New Zealand captain, Fleming was frequently regarded as the canniest leader on the international circuit. In 2001, he led New Zealand to an unlikely drawn three-match series Down Under, which the visitors almost won on the final evening. New Zealand benefited from Fleming’s shrewd tactics, notably packing the field in an opponent’s strong areas, as when placing two gullies to Damien Martyn.

As Nottinghamshire captain, he led the side to the County Championship title in his inaugural season in 2005.

While Fleming has not worked in the international game since his playing retirement in 2008, his Test credentials remain compelling: only two men have captained in more than his 80 Tests. His IPL success was built on tactical adaptability, meticulous preparation – retaining a cohesive identity while often bringing in players for specific matches – and his man management. England could benefit from such qualities.

Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka, 48

The Sri Lankan legend has strong coaching pedigree with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, working with a number of England cricketers. As a player, he had impeccable Test credentials, averaging 57.40 with the bat in his 134 Tests.

Such a record means that Sangakkara would command the respect of the entire dressing room. He is also well-versed in adapting his game to English conditions. In 2014, he turned down the IPL to ready himself for Sri Lanka’s Test tour of England, then peeled off 147, and half-centuries in his other three innings, to lead his country to a series victory.

Sangakkara divides his time between the IPL, Sri Lanka and England, where he has a house in Dorset and still plays, for Shillingstone Cricket Club. His stint as president of Marylebone Cricket Club deepened his knowledge of the English system and all its peculiarities. The Test role would be compatible with Sangakkara’s IPL commitments.
