BC Hydro is warning of possible power outages across the province due to multiple wildfires burning near Clinton.
The nearby Kelly Lake Substation is a critical 500kV station that serves as a central hub for transmitting hydroelectricity from the Peace and Bridge River regions down to the high-demand Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
“Customers across B.C. may be experiencing flickering lights, power interruptions, and fluctuations in power due to wildfire activity near Kelly Lake affecting transmission lines,” said BC Hydro. “The wildfire has caused an increase in transmission trips, resulting in momentary power disturbances. Active wildfire conditions prevent safe access to the area at this time.”
As of the morning of July 24, the Fiftynine Creek wildfire is burning at almost 17,000 hectares, with hot and dry conditions expected throughout the day today. The Pear Creek wildfire to the south sits at close to 4,000 hectares.
“We anticipate further fire growth and an increase in fire activity throughout the day,” said BC Wildfire Service. “More smoke is likely to be observed in the following days, particularly in the afternoon and evening periods.”
