Emergency services are responding to an incident at a busy tram stop in Manchester city centre.

Pictures show a large police and ambulance presence on Market Street this morning (Wednesday, July 29). A huge cordon has been put in place around the Market Street Metrolink stop.

Some trams have been halted in the city centre with no services operating between Victoria and Piccadilly. A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said a man has been rushed to hospital following reports that he became ‘injured on the tracks’.

He has suffered ‘possibly life-changing injuries’. In a statement, the GMP spokesperson said: “Emergency services are currently responding to an incident on Market Street Metrolink stop in Manchester City Centre after reports of man injured on the tracks.

“One man, aged in his 50s, has been taken to hospital where he is currently being treated for possibly life-changing injuries. No arrests have been made in relation to this incident, and a scene remains in place whilst enquiries continue.”

A TfGM spokesperson said: “At around 9.20am this morning we received reports of a man climbing between a double tram at Market Street Metrolink stop and becoming trapped. The man has since been released from the tram and has been taken to hospital.

“Staff supported emergency services while the stop was cordoned off and the scene has now been cleared. Service changes remain in place across Metrolink, and customers are advised to check the latest travel advice before making journeys by tram.”
