The Magpies suffered a pasting against Championship side Bristol City on a night to forget in the South West

Newcastle United goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen after conceding against Bristol City

Newcastle United slumped to an awful 4-1 defeat at the hands of Bristol City with a worrying display at Ashton Gate.

The Magpies found themselves 2-0 down at the break after Sam Greenwood’s free-kick off the bar before Lorent Tolaj easily brushed off Sven Botman to run down the right and fire under Ewen Jaouen.

It was 3-0 on 50 minutes after Bristol City skipper Jason Knight found Max Bird and he was allowed time and space to prod past half-time substitute Nick Pope.

Matheos Ferreira worked hard with 12 minutes left and set up Jacob Ramsey to lay on the goal for Harvey Barnes.

Sam Bell was afforded plenty of space down the left and his cross was met by a half-hearted clearance from Botman who ended up slicing past his own keeper.

Here’s how the Magpies fared in Bristol:

Ewen Jaouen 6

A good early double save to deny Sam Greenwood, but was then twice exposed by dodgy defending. Taken off at the break.

Jacob Murphy 5

Not convincing at right-back as Bristol City found many gaps down his flank.

Fabian Schar 5

Did not get going before hobbling off with another injury. Looked to be clutching his muscle.

Sven Botman 3

Easily brushed off the ball as Lorent Tolaj overpowered him before striding forward to score. Then looked slow to react as Max Bird worked his way around him and pinged one into the bottom corner.

An awful show capped by an own goal nine minutes before time.

Lewsi Hall 7

Easily the pick of the Newcastle defence. Was left fuming by some of the defending.

Jacob Ramsey 6

Tried to battle hard and set up a late goal for Barnes.

Sean Steur 7

One of the few to emerge with some credit. Looks to be playing above his tender years.

Joe Willock 5

Looked like he was going through the motions against the Championship outfit.

Anthony Elanga 6

Started well but fizzled out. Created some danger but is clearly getting back into the swing of things.

Sean Neave 7

Saw one first half effort saved from close range and another hit the bar after the break. Always creating but still waiting for a goal. A decent stint from the Geordie youngster.

Harvey Barnes 6

One blocked shot in the first half and at least showed some fight with a late strike.

Subs

Nick Pope 6 (for Jaouen 46)

Park Seung-soo 6 (for Neave 57)

Matheos Ferreira 7 (for Elanga 74)

Up for the fight and had a hand in the consolation.
