Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly is defying the hopes of the party hierarchy for a single presidential candidate after refusing to clear the way for Heather Humphreys by ruling out a run for the Áras.

Fine Gael could now face an internal battle to choose a candidate after the former GAA president told the Irish Independent last night he is reconsidering “with enthusiasm” whether to put his name forward and is “greatly encouraged” by the support he is getting.
