TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-Toledo) was taken to an area hospital to get checked out after a hit-and-skip crash in Toledo on Sunday morning, authorities tell 13 Action News.
Police said Kaptur, 80, and Kegan Zimmerman, 26, her campaign manager, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to an area hospital. A statement from Kaptur’s Congressional office said she’s active, alert and being treated for her injuries.
A spokesperson said Kaptur was heading to a church service when the vehicle she was riding in was struck. She was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
“Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash,” the statement from Rep. Kaptur’s office read. “She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”
The crash happened around 10:45 a.m. on N. Detroit near Central Ave.
Police reports said a vehicle heading south on Detroit came into the path of the car Kaptur and Zimmerman were traveling in, causing the crash.
TPD said the at-fault driver ran off from the scene. An update from a Toledo Police spokesperson Sunday evening said investigators made “significant” progress to identify the driver responsible for the crash.
“I had a chance to speak with Representative Marcy Kaptur today, and we’re glad to hear she’s doing well. Our thoughts remain with her and Mr. Zimmermann as they recover,” Toledo Police Chief Mike Troendle said in a statement. “Our investigators continue to make progress on this case. I appreciate the work our investigators have put in today, as well as the cooperation we’ve received from members of the community. We’re committed to identifying the person responsible and ensuring they are held accountable.”
A witness tells 13 Action News she heard the crash from her home.
“At first I thought it was the cars hitting the water grate in the road because it made a similar sound,” said Morgan Valley.
Valley says she ran to her front window to find the source of the sound. She did not expect to find two cars in extreme damage from the crash.
“I seen the first silver vehicle with the engine tossed across the street upon impact. I seen the second vehicle in my neighbor’s yard,” said Valley.
She called 9-1-1 immediately after, but was left in shock from the scene.
“I screamed because they thought it was a fatality at first and my neighbor said, get her in the house,” she said. “All I could do was pray to God.”
