Boy George has condemned Bandcamp for removing his new pro-Israel single, ‘We Will Dance Again’, which he made with the assistance of AI.
The track, which the Culture Club frontman shared in full on July 26th on social media, remains unavailable to stream on Spotify and is no longer available to buy on Bandcamp.
The web page for the song now directs to a message which reads, “Sorry, that something isn’t here. Please start at the beginning and you’ll certainly find what you’re looking for.”
Taking to Instagram on August 3rd, in a Reel captioned “Bandcamp What a bunch of c^^^s!”, he said, “Hey everyone, the drama continues. Sadly, Bandcamp have removed my profile so anyone trying to get a copy of ‘We Will Dance Again’ will have to just wait until I record it and find a way to put it out.”
The pop star continued, “Also, they’ve taken money so hopefully Bandcamp will refund that money. It’s very disappointing and obviously, y’know, if you’ve got the track already, make videos, play it on the internet, play it everywhere, just get it heard.”
It comes after Boy George had posted a series of links to his Bandcamp profile on X on August 2nd, before his account became no longer visible.
Bandcamp have yet to issue a statement, but in January, they confirmed that they have a strict no-AI policy on the platform, which ‘We Will Dance Again’ would go against.
The platform previously stated: “Music and audio that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI is not permitted on Bandcamp.”
Secondly, it continued, “Any use of AI tools to impersonate other artists or styles is strictly prohibited in accordance with our existing policies prohibiting impersonation and intellectual property infringement.”
Last week, Boy George admitted to using AI on the track, writing on Threads, “The song was created using AI. I call it ‘AI for good’. Truthfully, I would struggle to write this with a human!”
Therefore, this likely explains his ban from Bandcamp rather than the pro-Israel theme and lyrics such as, “You say genocide, I say war, When you’re attacked, It’s what the army is for.”
Amid the backlash to ‘We Will Dance Again’, Boy George withdrew from starring in Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End. His run as King Herod at the London Palladium was due to start today (August 3rd).
He’s also parted ways with the longtime manager of his BGP label, Tony Pontius, over ‘We Will Dance Again’, explaining, “I wanted to release ‘We Will Dance Again’, but he [Pontius] was unequivocal and said, ‘I want nothing to do with this song’, and I responded, ‘ok, we are done’.”
The singer added, “When someone is gutless, it really does not hurt to say goodbye. My faith in humanity will not diminish and the truth will always win. I will release it!”
