THE OPENING date of the city’s newest hospital has been revealed.
Bon Secours is to begin operating at a new state-of-the-art facility in Ballysimon Road, on Monday, September 1.
The move will see Bon Secours move out of its current premises at the former Barrington’s Hospital in the city centre.
This brings to an end almost 200 years of that building operating as a medical facility.

It’s understood the building has been sold, with the potential of the complex being turned into accommodation for asylum seekers explored.
The new Bon Secours hospital sees the creation of 300 new jobs, as part of a €190m investment.
Patients of the group were told of the opening date in an email.
Bon Secours said the new purpose-build hospital “brings with it an exciting expansion in services, capacity and medical speciality”.
The firm added that across the coming months, there will be a wider range of care in terms of cardiology, general medicine.
On top of this, there will be an increase in endocrinology, which is the study of hormones, and neurology which focuses on the disorders of the nervous system.
“With more space and expanded specialist care, the new hospital makes it easier to access the treatment you need, with shorter wait times and faster access to expert care,” they also promise.
Last month, it was announced that Alliance Medical had teamed up with Bon Secours to introduce the first PET/CT scanner in the region.
This combines two types of medical scanning, and will form a central part of the new Bon Secours hospital from October.
It’s hoped that once live, it will provide patients across the Mid-West and beyond with timely access to advanced imaging technology that combines metabolic and anatomical imaging, enabling earlier and more accurate detection of various conditions.
The area around the new hospital has seen rapid growth in the last number of years, with a new school, supermarket and homes.
