Montreal city council overwhelmingly adopted an amended motion on Gaza Monday night, after removing calls for the city to denounce what the original text described as apartheid and genocide against Palestinians and suspend institutional ties with Israel.

The motion passed 54-6 after councillors voted 38-22 for changes proposed by Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada’s administration. The final version expresses solidarity with Palestinians and other civilian victims, supports international legal processes and urges Ottawa and Quebec to pursue diplomatic measures and sanctions.

“We are not the International Court of Justice, and we are not the International Criminal Court,” Martinez Ferrada said during the debate.
